\u00a0Therese of Lisieux OCD<\/a><\/span>\u00a0(French<\/a>:\u00a0Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de Lisieux\u00a0[te\u0281\u025bz\u00a0<\/span>d\u0259\u00a0<\/span>lizj\u00f8]<\/a><\/span>; born\u00a0Marie Fran\u00e7oise-Th\u00e9r\u00e8se Martin; 2 January 1873 \u2013 30 September 1897),\u00a0religious name<\/a>\u00a0Therese of the Child Jesus and the Holy Face\u00a0(Th\u00e9r\u00e8se de l’Enfant J\u00e9sus et de la Sainte Face<\/span>), was a French\u00a0Discalced Carmelite<\/a>\u00a0who is widely venerated in modern times. She is popularly known in English as the\u00a0Little Flower of Jesus, or simply the\u00a0Little Flower, and in French as\u00a0la petite Th\u00e9r\u00e8se<\/span> (“little Therese”).<\/span>
Therese has been a highly influential model of sanctity for Catholics and for others because of the simplicity and practicality of her approach to the spiritual life. She is one of the most popular\u00a0saints<\/a>\u00a0in the history of the church,[4]<\/a><\/sup>[5]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0although she was obscure during her lifetime.[6]<\/a><\/sup>Pope Pius X<\/a> called her “the greatest saint of modern times”<\/span><\/p>

Therese felt an early\u00a0call to religious life<\/a>\u00a0and, after overcoming various obstacles, in 1888, at the early age of 15,[9]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0she became a nun and joined two of her elder sisters in the\u00a0cloistered<\/a>\u00a0Carmelite community of\u00a0Lisieux<\/a>,\u00a0Normandy<\/a>\u00a0(another sister, C\u00e9line, also later joined the order). After nine years as a Carmelite nun, having fulfilled various offices such as\u00a0sacristan<\/a>\u00a0and assistant to the\u00a0novice mistress<\/a>, in her last eighteen months in Carmel she fell into a\u00a0night of faith<\/a>, in which she is said to have felt Jesus was absent and been tormented by doubts that God existed. Therese died at the age of 24 from\u00a0tuberculosis<\/a>.<\/span>
Her\u00a0feast day<\/a>\u00a0in the\u00a0General Roman Calendar<\/a>\u00a0was 3 October from 1927 until it was moved in 1969 to 1 October.[10]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0She is well known throughout the world, with the\u00a0Basilica of Lisieux<\/a> being the second most popular place of pilgrimage in France fter\u00a0Lourdes<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>

Family background<\/span>
<\/a>Z\u00e9lie Martin<\/a>, mother of Therese<\/span><\/p>

Therese was born on Rue Saint-Blaise, in\u00a0Alen\u00e7on<\/a>, France on 2 January 1873, and was the daughter of\u00a0Marie-Az\u00e9lie Gu\u00e9rin<\/a>\u00a0(usually called Z\u00e9lie), and\u00a0Louis Martin<\/a>\u00a0who was a jeweler and watchmaker.[11]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Both her parents were devout Catholics who would eventually become the first (and to date only) married couple canonized together by the\u00a0Roman Catholic Church<\/a>\u00a0(by Pope Francis in 2015).<\/span><\/p>

Louis had tried to become a\u00a0canon regular<\/a>, wanting to enter the\u00a0Great St Bernard Hospice<\/a>, but had been refused because he did not know\u00a0Latin<\/a>. Z\u00e9lie, possessed of a strong, active temperament, wished to serve the sick, and had also considered entering\u00a0consecrated life<\/a>, but the\u00a0prioress<\/a>\u00a0of the\u00a0canonesses regular<\/a>\u00a0of the H\u00f4tel-Dieu in Alen\u00e7on had discouraged her outright.[12]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Disappointed, Z\u00e9lie learned\u00a0lacemaking<\/a> instead. She excelled in it and set up her own business on Rue Saint-Blaise at age 22.<\/span><\/p>

Louis and Z\u00e9lie met in early 1858 and married on July 13 of that same year at the\u00a0Basilica of Notre-Dame d’Alen\u00e7on<\/a>. At first they decided to live as brother and sister in a\u00a0perpetual continence<\/a>, but when a confessor discouraged them in this, they changed their lifestyle and had nine children. From 1867 to 1870, they lost 3 infants and five-year-old H\u00e9l\u00e8ne. All five of their surviving daughters became nuns. In addition to Therese, they were:<\/span><\/p>

A dreamer and brooder, an idealist and romantic, [the father] gave touching and na\u00efve pet names [to his daughters]: Marie was his ‘diamond’, Pauline his ‘noble pearl’, C\u00e9line ‘the bold one’. But Therese was his ‘little queen’, to whom all treasures belonged.<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
